Telephone

International calls can be made fairly easily and cheaply in Hidalgo. The "Carniceria La Mexicana" located just down the street from the Tuesday market (see map) sells the phone cards you will need. Across the street from the shop are two public phones, which are known to work - sporadically. There are instructions in English; basically you put in the card and dial 011, the area code, and the 7-digit number (for US and Canada). The rates per minute are very reasonable and your 50 peso card will be good for about 8 minutes. A somewhat more reliable phone can be found at the mini super "El Aguaje" on the way out of town toward the Potrero. The latter shop is incidentally the closest well-stocked grocery store to the Rancho.
