El Salto
Rogelio Villanueva enjoys a tufa-studded 5.11 in the Tecolote caves.

El Salto is a lush canyon deep within the mountains of Sierra Madre Oriental. There are relatively few routes here, but they are of high quality, often on overhanging rock. Visiting El Salto involves a long drive into the mountains and a short hike to the cliffs, but most climbers who visit find it well worth it. However, because the routes start at 5.11 and are usually quite pumpy, you need to be at least somewhat honed to.climb here.
Crimping away at the warm-up route (11b).
El Salto Walls

Las Animas. This wall rises up right over the 4x4 track that passes through the canyon. A bunch of routes is to be found on the left side of the slightly overhanging walls where hanging tufas abound. Crimpy moves off the ground lead to desparate tufa-pinching above on most routes.

El Tecolote. This is an area of caves accessed by a trail a little further into the canyon from Las Animas. The nearly horizontal ceilings of several caves offer burly tufa-slapping endurance pump-fests, the most classic of which is Nosferatus 5.12c.
