How to Get to El Salto
Directions
Drive southeast from Hidalgo on Hwy 53 into Monterrey. Pass through the city heading south in the general direction of Cerro de la Silla, the prominent saddle-shaped mountain that is the symbol of the state of Nuevo Leon. You actually want to pass to the west (right) of the mountain and get onto Hwy 85 signed to Allende and Linares. Once on the highway, continue southeast about 28 km after the end of the city. Just after you pass a large reservoir visible on the left, in the town of El Cercado, turn left onto a small paved road marked Cola de Caballo. Follow this narrow, winding road 22 km past the Cola de Caballo waterfall (worth checking out), over a pass and downhill into the small town of Cienega de Gonzales. Buy your victuals here in any of several tiny stores. Continue west on the main road through the village until you see a church on the left; turn right here onto a dirt road. Following this road you will soon find yourself surrounded by the high walls of a canyon. The best camping is at the entrance of the canyon; leave your car here also unless you're ready for some serious four-wheeling. Follow the road downhill for about 1km until you see the (usually dry, rapellable) cave/waterfall of El Salto on the left. The Las Animas wall will be on your right. For the Tecolote Cave, follow the road further descending almost to the riverbed. A small trail exists here on the right which will take you to the cave after a brisk 10 minute ascent.
