Even
if you don't bring a bike, the refreshing waters of the spring are
still only an hour's walk from the Rancho, and hiking within the Potrero
makes for a fulfilling rest-day diversion from climbing. Or, you can
make a long day of it and hike a trail that climbs the mountainside
above the spring, escapes from the Potrero Chico, crosses a high plateau,
then climbs higher still before finally descending the precipitous
side of Potrero Garcia, the Chico's sister formation to the southwest.
Wide-ranging views of wild mountain peaks await those that venture
here. Excellent campsites exist on the high but level ridges, so the
hike can also be done in two days. That may also leave more time to
see the "Grutas", located near the mouth of the Potrero
Garcia. These are limestone caves accessible by cable car. From the
town of Garcia one may return to Hidalgo by bus via Monterrey.
