There are no shops that sell climbing gear in Hidalgo; a few exist
in Monterrey (see map for more info
and links). You'd be well advised to bring from home everything
you need for your climbing adventures, including a supply of climbing
chalk, which is very difficult to obtain in Mexico. Tape can be
useful for some routes with well-known sharp pockets or cracks.
The grey, scratchy, less-than-vertical rock present on most easier
climbs (and a few of the hardest) quickly chews up shoe rubber,
so if your shoes are approaching the end of their useful life, go
out and buy a new pair before you come down.
Most routes in the Potrero are bolted, though some good trad routes
exist and many bolted routes can be done just fine on trad gear.
Pitches here are 30m or less with a few notable exceptions (knot
the free end of your rope before climbing!). You need at least a
single 60m rope to climb here; some routes require a 70m cord and
some multi-pitch routes require two 60's to make the rappels. Very
few if any routes require more than 15 draws, with 10-12 being standard.
All rap anchors are in situ and there is no need to bring
extra webbing and such. The use of helmets is highly recommended,
especially because many sport climbing crags have popular but loose
multi-pitch routes looming above (see Caveat).
