MTB Circuits

Here are some technical circuits you will enjoy. Most of these are ridden frequently by the locals. For the general location of each, refer to the large Potrero Chico Map which will show you even more trails you can explore.

El Nacimiento (The Spring), 7 km, Easy to Moderate. You will visit the spring where you can take a refreshing dip in pure clear water, and see the amazing ancient oak (Encino Gordo). This is a scenic tour of the interior of the Potrero on fairly easy double track roads. This circuit also makes for a great 2-hour excursion on foot.
Circuit 2:
El Yeso Rojo (Red Gypsum Trails), 10 km, Technical. This circuit explores the rough roads and singletracks in the geologically oldest area of the Potrero. A fun variety of technical obstacles exist: rock steps, difficult uphill, steep descents, fast turns.
Circuit 3:
Las Tenerías - El Pinito, 8 km, Technical. This circuit of the east end of the Potrero begins at el Nacimiento; it is a total of 15 km to make it from the canyon. Long sections of fairly easy singletrack are punctuated with sudden technical obstacles. A flood in 2002 wiped out the return trail, so for now, you will have to return the way you came.
Circuit 4
La Mina de Tarta, 7.5 km, Moderate to Technical. A brisk half-hour of biking, this circuit can be conveniently done from Rancho Cerro Gordo. After a stiff climb to the calcite mine, you'll be rewarded by several kilometers of enjoyable, fast downhil on gravelly, half-forgotten roads, followed by a few technical obstacles on JJ's back-yard singletrack.
Circuit 5
El Rincón de Abajo, 9.5 km, Technical. This formerly excellent trail has also been damaged by the 2002 flood. However, about 90% of the singletrack is still rideable and it's well worth it for those who don't mind carrying the bike from time to time. The trail offers great views of the mountains and plant life, and fun technical riding both up and down hill.
Circuit 6
The Mina Badlands, 24km, Moderate. The badlands near the Salinas River offer an atmosphere that's quite different from that of the Potrero. Have fun exploring and discovering new obstacles; it can be as easy or difficult as you make it. Visit the town of Mina for delicious ice cream in the shady plaza, before taking dirt roads back to Hidalgo.
