| Description.
This very scenic
tour is a great introduction to biking or hiking in the Potrero, and
takes in two of its most interesting sights: the Spring and the Ancient
Oak Tree. Begin in the canyon and take the dirt road south into the
Potrero proper. About 200m after passing the Spires the road will
fork - take the right fork which climbs out of the gravelly stream
bed. Follow this main road uphill past cottages and ranchos. The road
climbs steadily a ways, then drops slightly into a salt flats area.
Stay on the main road which veers left and crosses an arroyo (stream
bed). Do not take a right either before or after the arroyo but continue
straight, up and down another hill. Fork right here, following the
larger road, and climb another long, tiring hill. At the top, pass
a driveway on the left, then fork left, then right, neither climbing
nor descending. Cross a running stream at a badly eroded section (Caution!
large drop on left). Keep right at the next two forks, but do not
cross the stream. Finally, where the road begins to climb steeply,
cut right onto a small trail near a sign in a tree, and go downhill
to the stream. Follow the stream uphill a very short distance, then
leave your bike on the gravel bar, cross the stream, and follow the
trail for 1 minute uphill to the wonderful waterfall and bathing
pool. The water here is cool but not cold, and the same temperature
year-round. Take a refreshing bath. The spring itself is a
5 minute hike uphill, you may follow the stream there if you like,
then return to your bikes via a road on the east (right) bank of the
stream. Returning, see if you can ride your bike out of the gravel
bar and onto the road. Go left on the road, but do not enter the eroded
section: rather, fork right and downhill, and immediately fork right
again. El Encino Gordo, the ancient oak tree, will be on your
left across a flat, open area. Admire it for a while. Now you can
either return the way you came (faster and easier), or, follow the
old road north and east from the tree. This road descends steeply,
sporting some mildly technical, rocky sections. Eventually you will
exit in the main arroyo, and follow its gravelly washes back into
the canyon. What a nice way to spend a rest day! |
