One word: spines. Almost everything
that grows in these parts is covered with them, and this does not
always bode well for your bike tires (and yourself). 'Slime' and
various other anti-flat remedies really come into their own here.
We especially recommend slime-filled tubes, since without them it
is not uncommon to get ten or more flats per ride - in each tire!
Bring some spares too, because once a slime tube gets a big puncture,
it cannot be repaired.
There is no specialized MTB stores
in Hidalgo, you will need to go to Monterrey to purchase spare parts
and/or get your bike repaired (see local
shops page). This will take a good part of your day, so it's
better to come prepared.. Bring your toolkit and a selection of
spare parts that fit your bike. Spare tubes, chain, spokes, brake
pads, brake and derailleur cables, lubricants, etc. will probably
come in handy. Bikes get a beating on the rough Potrero trails,
so inspect your bike frequently.
