In Hidalgo,
there are no specialized mountain bike shops. The best you get is
the blue-painted bike store on the corner of Mier and Morelos just
up from the Mano de Dios supermarket. However, the most you will
get here are tire patches - they don't even carry spare tubes with
Presta valves. To get anything more, you'll have to travel to Monterrey.
There are
several decent bike shops located within metropolitan Monterrey.
If you are looking for parts and accessories, generally the best
place to go is Julio Cepeda. They have a good selection and the
best prices in town. However, looking for a spare part may turn
into a wild goose chase and you may have to visit all the shops
on the map! At Ranchito the staff is very friendly and the prices
are also reasonable. The San Pedro shops tend to be more expensive
but may have the specialty items you are looking for. It is still
best to anticipate and bring whatever you think you may need from
home. Some things can be gotten cheaper in Mexico but looking for
them can be a hassle. So come prepared!
The shops
can be found with the map shown here. (Aventura Verde is a climbing
store.) Check out the links for more
info. Several of the main streets have been labeled. Navigating
in Monterrey is fairly easy but stay alert driving - things can
get pretty crazy out there. If you don't have a car, take the bus
from Hidalgo and grab a cab ride to any of the stores. Cabs are
cheap in Monterrey, you're not likely to spend more than 100 pesos.
